Tonight is the Night Out In Downtown Mesa. In the paper this morning and on the front page is this story

Apparently in addition to the Ice Cream Social, a local club is bringing cruising back to Main Street. Let's show up with "Welcome Cruisers" signs and show our support! These aren't the cruisers of 30 years ago. If you've been to any of the cruises held on Main Street you know, it was a great time!

I took my son to this event. It was good for downtown mesa. My young family has attended almost every event, and went the first time. We love it. Thing is, the DMA better be careful about the silver bullet mentality from cruising. You might get people cruising you may not want in the downtown area. Also, you have to be creative and bring different options. And I am sorry to say, but I think the DMA as of lately seems to be lacking any ideas of moving downtown forward.
You have light rail coming downtown too. So, you want to bring more of an “urban environment”. Visiting other cities, I would suggest it goes down main (at least one line, and the other goes down either 1st street/ave). It has done wonders in a lot of these cities, and with gas going up, it would be wise to get all of those people stopping and riding and seeing downtown Mesa. Bring more density and downtown will thrive.
Anyways, I don’t understand why you want to hurt an event such as memories on main street that is a “must attend event” for a small group of cruisers from the 70’s. Think of the arts festival (similar to the one Tempe on Mill), farmers market on main, sidewalk sales, concerts of local bands on main, bring more vendors along main (in the streets), Friday “summer water” nights, and the list goes on. This can be sponsored by local Pool companies. I mean, come on DMA, lets be creative for once. Keep memories on main st the main event for cruising 2-3 times a year, and leave it be.
The Second Friday events have been organized by Downtown Merchants, not by DMA. The reason for doing these second Fridays each month is to get people to come to the downtown area who would not normally do so. Hopefully these people will come back to shop and dine in our businesses. We as merchants want more Mesa residents to rediscover our community.
